He became an instant hit with the home fans, coming off the subs bench to win the Man-of-the-Match award against table toppers Droylsden on his debut. After his loan period expired the centre half returned to United, but a day later signed on a permanent basis for the Poppies and ended the 06-07 season with five goals. He also represented the Non-League England National XI side in this season. John became Poppies captain during the 2007-08 season, leading by example he had a brilliant season as the side won the Blue Square North at a canter and John's performances earned him the 'Supporters Player of the Year', the 'Players Player of the Season' and the 'Vice President's Player of the Year', Another successful Poppies season saw John pick up his second 'Supporters Player of the Year for season 2009-10.
